Garden construction in Caversham from Stephen Anthony Developments. Patios, paths, retaining walls, steps and drainage built on proper foundations so the ground stays where you put it and water goes where it should.
A patio is only as good as what is under it. We dig out, lay and compact a sub base, then bed the slabs on a full mortar bed rather than dabs. That is the difference between a patio that stays flat and one that rocks and lifts after two winters.

More Information
Every hard surface needs a slight fall away from the house, and somewhere for that water to go. Getting this wrong sends rain towards your walls or leaves puddles that never dry. Where a garden slopes we work out the levels before pricing anything.
Sloping gardens need retaining walls to make usable flat areas. A retaining wall holds back real weight, so it needs a footing, the right blocks and drainage behind it. Steps are set to an even rise so nobody trips on the odd one out.
Garden construction sits naturally alongside our building work, because it uses the same skills: groundworks, drainage, brickwork and levels. We take on gardens as standalone jobs and as the last stage of an extension, when the outside space needs putting back properly. After 34 years the same team handles both, so the finish outside matches the standard of the work inside.

STILL NOT SURE?
Spring and early autumn are easiest, because the ground is workable and mortar cures well. Hard landscaping can be built through winter, but heavy rain slows groundworks and frost stops mortar setting properly. We will not lay paving in freezing conditions.
Usually not for a patio at ground level. Walls and fences have height limits, generally two metres, or one metre next to a road. Raised decking and platforms above 300mm can need permission. We check the specifics for your garden before work starts.
A straightforward patio takes about one to two weeks. Add retaining walls, steps and drainage and you are looking at three to four. Wet weather can add days, since groundworks and mortar both need reasonable conditions to be done properly.
