New Home Construction in Caversham

New home construction in Caversham by Stephen Anthony Developments. The build stage itself, whether you are starting from foundations or taking over a project that another contractor has left part finished.

The Build Stages Explained

Construction runs in clear stages: substructure, superstructure, watertight shell, first fix, plaster, second fix and finishes. Knowing which stage you are at tells you what is left to pay and how long remains. We issue a programme showing all of it before we start.

More Information

Timber Frame or Traditional Brick and Block

Timber frame goes up quickly and gets watertight sooner, which suits a tight timescale. Brick and block is slower on site but more forgiving of changes as you go. Both are perfectly sound. The choice usually comes down to programme, budget and your designer's preference.

Site Management and Trades

A new home needs a dozen trades in the right order. Somebody has to book them, check the work and sort out clashes. That is our job. You get one number to call rather than trying to work out whose fault a delay is.

About us

New home construction is where our building experience shows most, because a house has to be right at every stage and mistakes are expensive to unpick. In 34 years we have built from drawings by architects, designers and engineers, and we read them properly before quoting. Anything awkward or costly to build gets flagged while it can still be changed.

  • 34 years building across Caversham and Reading

  • Show home in RG4 you can look round

  • Office in RG4 and clients are welcome to call in

  • One team from groundworks to final finish

  • Written quotes before any work is agreed

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you take over a half finished build near Reading?

Yes, and it is more common than people think. We survey what is there, compare it with the drawings and the structural calculations, then price the remaining work. If something already built is wrong, we tell you before we start rather than after.

How long does new home construction take from foundations?

A typical detached house takes around nine to twelve months from the start of groundworks to handover. Timber frame can shave a few weeks off getting watertight. Bad weather during groundworks and long lead times on windows are the usual causes of delay.

Who arranges the structural engineer and the drawings?

Usually your architect appoints the engineer, but we can recommend people we have worked with if you do not have anyone. We would rather be involved while the drawings are being finalised, because it is the cheapest point to spot something that will be awkward to build.
